5 Smart Ways to Improve Your Site's SEO

Posted on

SEO is the process of trying to get a good ranking in the search engines for particular keywords. If you want your business to succeed online, having a good SEO strategy is often one of the most long-term sustainable ways to ensure you get consistent traffic to your website.

#1: Know Where to Use Keywords

At the heart of SEO is targeting the right keywords for your website. If you already have an idea of the type of keywords that you want to rank on your site, you need to make sure you are putting the keywords on the right parts of your page.

For your primary keyword, you want that keyword to appear in the title tag for that page, in the URL for that page, and then in the first 100 words of your content. Putting the primary keyword you are targeting in these three places will help increase the chance of your keyword ranking higher.

#2: Create Easy-to-Read Content

When someone clicks on a search result, how long they then stay on that page, and on your site, matters. You want to stop people from clicking on your link in the search engine and just as quickly closing the page. You can do this by making sure that your content is easy to read. Make sure you are creating content with fonts that are easy to read.

Don't write everything as one big long chunk of text. Instead, break up paragraphs into two or three sentences, add subheadings, and use bullets when applicable. Breaking up your text, and creating white space on the page will help engage readers and keep them on your page longer, which in turn will help with your search engine ranking.

#3: Get Rid of Pages That Don't Get Traffic

At least once a month, you should sit down and analyze the pages on your site that are getting traffic, and those that are not getting any traffic. If you notice that you have specific pages that month after month are not getting any traffic, you are going to want to get rid of those pages. These "zombie pages" as they are often referred to, can bring down your search engine rankings and traffic.

Getting rid of zombie pages will help your search engine ranking as search engines prefer sites that have lots of high-quality pages, and pages that are not getting any views, be it a product page or a blog, are driving your site down in the rankings.

#4: Use Related Keywords

Keyword rankings have gotten much smarter over time. Search engines don't just want to see the primary keyword in your content, they want to see other related keywords as well as synonyms of the keyword in your content. Search engines work to understand the content on your page and using related keywords can help them do so.

#5: Update Pages

Once you create a page, you are not done with it. Make sure that you go back to pages and improve them over time. Add updated information. Considering adding more authoritative external links. Add subheadings and sections to the page. Revamp the description. Just putting a little time into your old pages can help them get a new life and improve their rankings.

There are numerous ways to make improvements to your site in order to improve the search engine optimization of your site. Start by working with an SEO service provider to help you implement tips that will make your website more engaging and more responsive from an SEO perspective.
